Marcus and Kylie came to us for a week from the Eastleigh Community School and we thought they were great! Read their versions here....

It was the day of my interview that I got to meet some of the staff of LMM. I was so afraid that I would give a bad first impression, considering I was 30 minutes late due to getting lost in the area! Eventually, I arrived at the work placement, being greeted so kindly by Charlotte and Hannah who were part of the LMM team. They were so supportive, even on the first day. As I arrived they smiled welcomingly and directed me to a room where the meeting was being held. I was nervous at first, but they made me feel quite confident by the end of the interview.

Ah! My first day working at LMM; it was a scary but amazing experience. The tasks which I were told to complete were very straight forward, as the instructions given were very clear. Already, on the first day I felt like I fitted in. I attended a meeting about an event which was coming up in the next month. This allowed me to contribute my ideas and ask any questions about the corporation which I didn’t know of. I also got to know three other people who were part of the LMM team – Rob, Rachel and Rhuti

No matter how long you are in the office, there is never enough time to get bored because there is always something to do. Everyone is always calm and cheerful, no matter how much work is to be done. Conversations are always held and jokes are always being made. The overall environment of the office is just brilliant.

On the second working day I had my safety induction and started working on sending formal emails with another work experience student from my school - Marcus. This was very useful, as it introduced us into the working world. We also made our first telephone calls from the office! The third day was just as interesting, as we did some research on some upcoming orchestral events to see during the week and created more emails. Professionalism was the key.

Thursday was one of the most exciting days of the week, because we got to visit a school nearby which LMM was working with – Ashmole. Here, we got to see the teaching method of the violin teachers and how “the bridge project” program worked. This was a wonderful experience, as I enjoyed watching Year 2 children learn whilst having the time of their lives. I found this project scheme very inspiring, which got me thinking about my future more.

Sooner or later the fun had to end unfortunately. It was Friday - the last day of my work placement L I didn’t want to go. However, for a memorable day Hannah had took me and Marcus to St. Martins in the Fields, where we got to see a live performance of Beth Chen and Paloma Bruce – two famous musicians from New Zealand. We had a very cool time, as after the show we had the chance to discuss the pros and cons of the performance.

In conclusion to this, over the past few days I had found the placement incredibly useful. It had got me thinking about what type of career I wanted to take up in the future. I had no idea how broad and how many opportunities the music industry had, but now after all the support I have had from the staff here at LMM, I have a more good idea of what I want to do. Overall, everybody has been so kind and helpful here and I wouldn’t hesitate to come back again.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On my first day of work I woke up early and ready for work (I still felt a mixture of feelings); my minds focused on work! I’m feeling pretty positive and I must say that I did great job of arriving early. I was so glad when I entered the grand building. I was met by some friendly faces. It felt like I was in the Queen’s palace.

Eventually, when I arrived in the office I was told that my placement doesn’t start until an hour later. I was shocked and felt like such a fool. But I just laughed it off and was keen to get stuck in with some tasks.

The type of tasks I experienced were: preparing a presentation for what I know about the organisation I’m working for – show my understanding/knowledge. Also, I was set even more fun tasks, like finding some research on various schools involved with London Music Masters. These tasks were definitely interesting seen as it was my very first typical work day. I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed answering the phonecalls (which was a couple of times).

I had a 1 hour lunch break to eat/do whatever I wished. On most days, it was a trip to my favourite restaurant; MCDONALDS! I would usually order an unhealthy but tasty Mayo chicken, chips and a tasty BBQ sauce.

After lunch Kylie and I completed the tasks which were mostly, sending emails, attending meetings etc… After that, I would go home lie down on my soft bed and watch tv after a long day of work. And soon it reached Friday and to be honest, I couldn’t understand how the week went so fast.

On the last day of work experience I travelled to St Martins in field to see a music concert which has a classical element of music to it. It featured Beth Chen and Paloma Bruce – pianist and vocal singer. It was definitely useful attending this concert as I’ve never actually seen one! I did find the programme of songs a bit bizarre (especially the story of Barbar the elephant) but it was quite interesting listening to the pianist, as I play piano too.

After the concert it was time to say my goodbyes. My time here has been great!

The staff have been helpful and friendly; I’ve met some new people and its just been an amazing experience. All I can say now is that I’ve experienced the life of work. And my overall response is: work’s tiring, however, it was surely a great life experience and I think that it will help me with my future, which I hope involves music.

I will miss all the staff and hopefully I can attend some of the great events they hold here such as: the projects, Christmas celebration and many more…

Thanks for having me here & all the best to the staff!

 Marcus.
