Alexandra Soumm and Illya Amar visit Queen’s Park Primary school

On 1 November, we hosted a sold-out evening Connections Concert at Queen’s Park Primary school featuring former LMM Award Holder, violinist Alexandra Soumm, with percussionist Illya Amar. It was an incredibly special occasion, and we were delighted to bring our fantastic artists and their wonderful music to our students, their families and local community in such a beautiful setting. The Queen’s Park school hall was transformed into an intimate and relaxed performing space for Alexandra and Illya, who played a selection of traditional middle-eastern songs, and new pieces composed by Illya, who also improvised on the vibraphone. A particularly thrilling moment was when audience members began singing along to a familiar tune from North Africa.



It was wonderful having Alexandra and Illya in town for a few days, as they were also able to work with LMM students at Ashmole Primary school; giving master classes and helping to lead a creative composition workshop facilitated by animateur Aga Serugo-Lugo, ending their stay by performing a newly-composed piece on the ‘States of Matter’ with 18 Year 3 LMM students to friends and family.


Alexandra founded the charity Esperanz'Arts, a non-profit association with the goal of making the arts accessible to those who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to participate. Alexandra and Illya have worked together since its inception, performing in schools, care homes, hospitals, prisons and community settings all over the world. We can’t wait for the next exciting opportunity for Alexandra, Illya and our students to work together again soon!
