World premieres for two LMM Award Holders

Over the past two months, our inaugural composer Award Holders Shiva Feshareki and Jack White have had significant world premieres; opportunities which have been provided through their Awards with London Music Masters. 

 

Shiva’s ‘GABA-analogue’ was premiered by our long-standing creative partner London Contemporary Orchestra in a seriously sold-out gig at Printworks in August. The vast new venue, which, as its name suggests, was a former newspaper printworks factory, was the perfect space for Shiva’s highly-sculptural piece which deconstructed the orchestra to create an acoustic stereo/surround sound effect, producing a constantly evolving sonic experience, spinning sound like a turntable. It was an incredibly bold and daring work, which created an utterly unique sound-world and experience. Watch the NTS broadcast of the work here.


 As ever at LMM, we also create opportunities for Learning students to engage with the works and projects of our Award holders. In addition to sitting-in on the rehearsals, nine LMM Alumni students had the opportunity to work with Shiva in the space, and create their own captivating musical responses to GABA-analogue. 

 

September brought the world premiere of Jack White’s ‘Three After-Dinner Pieces’, which was written for YCAT artists, trombonist Peter Moore, and pianist Richard Uttley. As a millennial composer, Jack has formed a portfolio career, working in a number of areas to supplement his income.

 

This includes working in a cheese shop, and so, the work was inspired by Jack’s love of and his deepened knowledge of the popular after-dinner treat. Set in three movements, inspired by Stilton, Caerphilly, and Epoisses respectively, Jack captures the essence of these cheeses through their physical forms and taste, as well as their country of origin. For example, the viscosity of Epoisses encouraged Jack to explore the glissandi effects in the trombone part, and the mouldy striation of stilton reminded him of unsynchronised fanfares.

 

The world premiere took place in Bristol’s Colston Hall, in September before the London premiere at Wigmore Hall on 3 October. The audience was extremely welcoming of the piece, which included 40 of our own Learning students, who had been working with Jack in the lead-up to the performances in a series of creative composition workshops; creating their own pieces based on their own favourite after-dinner delights!
